Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Leiden University, Netherlands is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Computational Modeling of Auger Capture Rates
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The Faculty of Science Leiden and the Leiden Institute of Chemistry are looking for a PhD student to work on a project related to around plasma-surface interactions. Unlike gases, plasmas contain highly reactive species such as radicals and ions. These species are of interest for plasma-enhanced catalytic reactions and for plasma-assisted structuring of surfaces. However, the understanding of plasma-surface interactions is still in its infancy: existing PSI models used in engineering are empirically motivated and fail to capture the underlying surface interactions required for mechanistic understanding. A prevailing assumption for metal surfaces is that excited electrons effectively neutralise plasma ions on impact through Auger processes.

2. 02 Fully Funded PhD in Worlding America
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are looking for an excellent, highly motivated, enterprising and enthusiastic PhD candidate to join the project team. WORLDING AMERICA researches how play has been a key force in the past and present process of creating America as a coherent and hegemonic world, from 1503 to the present. ‘Play’ is an activity linked to change, serious even when frivolous, potentially transgressive even when rule-bound. Play intersects with the process of worlding (bringing a new world into existence) in liminal moments when new media forms develop in conjunction with political developments. WORLDING AMERICA seeks out historical moments of disruptive play, when new visual media were introduced that contributed directly to tangible political change.
Application Deadline: 8 November 2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in Sign Language and Deaf Studies
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Applications are invited for a PhD position in sign language studies at the Leiden Center for Linguistics. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Victoria Nyst. The position will involve doing research on the use of sign language in the Netherlands or another country with a long, documented history of Deaf education and is part of an NWO-funded project Through the hands of signers: modeling spread and change in historical sign language linguistics.

4. 02 Fully Funded PhD in Reinforcement Learning for Sustainable Energy
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The lab is part of LIACS, the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, in close collaboration with an industrial partner. You will work with top AI researchers in reinforcement learning and machine learning and have access to state-of-the-art industry experts, data and knowledge, allowing you to make an impact during your PhD research. In both positions you will work with real world data and models, aimed at developing fundamental methods with real world impact.
The lab is affiliated with the LIACS Reinforcement Learning Group, supervised by Aske Plaat and Thomas Moerland.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD in Software Optimization and Compiler
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are looking for a PhD candidate in Software Optimization and Compiler Techniques. This is an exciting and fully-funded dual-appointment PhD candidate and junior software administrator position that allows you to both conduct cutting-edge research leading to a PhD thesis as well as gain experience in system administration in a scientific computing environment. Both require in-depth knowledge and understanding of low-level computer systems and as such these positions reinforce each other. The practice helps the theory, and the theory helps the practice. As such, this unique position allows you to become a highly specialized researcher in the field of structure and optimization of computer systems.

6. 02 Fully Funded PhD in Palaeolithic Archaeology
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University, seeks to appoint a full-time PhD candidate to carry out research in Paleolithic Archaeology. The successful candidate will join the Department of World Archaeology of our Faculty. The research should lead you to obtain a PhD within a four-year timeframe (1.0 FTE). The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr Wei Chu (PI), Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University. The PhD candidate’s research is part of the ERC-funded Consolidator grant: HOME: Palaeolithic shelters in East-Central Europe.
Application Deadline: 15 November 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD in study transcription factor binding to chromatin at the single-molecule level
Summary of Funded PhD Program
In this project, we aim to design and construct custom chromatin fibers composed of dozens of nucleosomes to elucidate how these structures fold into higher-order configurations and how chromatin architecture influences transcription factor binding. Concurrently, a second PhD candidate in the Tineke Lenstra group at the Dutch Cancer Institute will investigate how transcription factor binding dynamics and cooperativity are regulated by individual nucleosomes, self-interactions, and DNA shape, and how these mechanisms govern single-cell transcription dynamics. You will collaborate closely and receive support from a multi-disciplinary team from both labs.
Application Deadline: 30 November 2024
