Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Luleå University of Technology, Sweden is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Machine Learning focus Sustainable Machine Learning
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The research projects on sustainable machine learning focus on using Edge AI and Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) (https://youtu.be/MgqcLCqqjuQ) to create efficient, low-power models that can operate on edge devices with limited computational resources. By leveraging Edge AI, these projects aim to process data locally, reducing the need for data transmission to centralized servers, which in turn lowers energy consumption and latency. TinyML further enhances sustainability by enabling the deployment of machine learning models on microcontrollers and other highly resource-constrained devices.

2. Fully Funded PhD in Machine Elements – circular economy for electric motors
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are looking for a PhD student who will work on developing an understanding of how to maximize energy efficiency and material utilization for industrial electric motors. The project is carried out together with industries from all phases of the circular economy. The collaboration will also take place together with a doctoral student in business development.
Application Deadline: October 13, 2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in Automatic Control with Focus on Control and Optimization of Fossil Free Steel Production
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The main research area will concern control and optimization, applied to fossil free steel production. The aim of the project is to explore the use of control methods and optimization techniques in a novel steel production process, where hydrogen replaces the fossil fuel in the conventional process. The project is funded by LKAB´s foundation for sustainable transition of the mining and mineral sector.

4. Fully Funded PhD in architecture (LTU Arts-Based Research Center, ARC)
Summary of Funded PhD Program
As a doctoral student in architecture, your research will center on developing artistic-based theories, methods, and collaborative interventions to investigate the energy and climate transition in northern Sweden and beyond. The project is anchored on the Swedish policy initiative for Designed Living Environments with a focus on green transition and long-term sustainability, with exploration of innovation through interaction between art and technology. Important actors outside the university are the municipalities and region as well as actors in the architecture sector.
Application Deadline: 3 October 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD in Information Systems in data-driven decision-making
Summary of Funded PhD Program
In the MARTINA project, we intend to build on the conditions for green and digital transformation locally in the Arctic to support the development of human-centered AI innovations. This project will contribute to Industry 5.0 and society’s green and digital transformation. This will be particularly important in the green transition based on Industry 5.0, where humans work side-by-side with AI systems, thereby enhancing human capabilities by, for example, predicting events, automating routine tasks, adapting to individual needs, streamlining tasks, and supporting decision-making.
