Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Biomedical Optics
Summary of Funded PhD Program
For this project, we are looking for three PhD students who will work on optical system development, novel catheter designs, data processing algorithms, and modeling of scattering and polarization properties of tissue, with the goal of bringing these technologies to patient care. The research will be conducted at the VU University in Amsterdam. The candidate will be part of the PhD program of the Biophotonics & Medical Imaging section under the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. J.F. de Boer, an internationally recognised leader in the field of Biophotonics (www.deboer.one).
Application Deadline: 31-7-2024

2. Fully Funded PhD in Quantum Logic Spectroscopy – Precision measurements of trapped H2+ ions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are looking for a motivated PhD student, with a degree in physics or physical chemistry and with experience in atomic/molecular/optical physics and/or molecular spectroscopy, who wishes to work with us in the international and stimulating environment of the joint Quantum Metrology group at LaserLaB Amsterdam. This project aims to measure the level structure of weakly-bound molecular states of H2+ with unprecedented accuracy using novel quantum technologies. These transitions in the microwave and THz range are particularly sensitive to the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mp/me) and exotic spin-dependent interactions. For this, you will be involved in developing a novel cryogenic ion trap for quantum-logic spectroscopy using H2+ (spectroscopy) and Be+ (logic) ions.
Application Deadline: 22-10-2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in Mechanical Characterization of Nucleic acids using Single Molecule techniques (MECHANISM)
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Nucleic acids (NAs) are central to the storage, transmission, and regulation of genetic information. DNA carries the genetic information for all cellular life, while RNA plays many diverse roles. These include not only the traditional roles of messenger-, transfer- and ribosomal-RNA, but also many regulatory functions such as gene silencing in RNA interference, precision nuclease targeting in CRISPR/Cas, and in providing the blueprint for mounting mRNA vaccine immune responses to combat SARS-CoV-2. Significantly, the genetic material of many viruses, including influenza, HIV and SARS-CoV-2, consist of RNA folded into complex 3D structures.
